In an
article on page 12 of the May 1996 issue of Central European, a number
of allegations were made about Zoran Markovic, one of the Central
Europe's leading businessmen. Those allegations should not have been
made and we wish to make the position clear.
Zoran Markovic returned to his home country from Canada, where he
was educated, to run a profitable business while investing in the
community and education of his employees. The elite of Yugoslav management
chose him Manager of the Year for three years in a row. He made considerable
investment in the local community and gave employees of the company,
Bel Pagette, substantial sums for each newborn baby.
The article concerned the takeover of Bel Pagette Yugoslavia by the
Brother Karic
Group, Zoran Markovic disputes the legal basis upon which the
takeover was permitted to take place by the Belgrade Court, in particular
the fact that a company with a turnover of $40m was taken over for
$1.2m. He believes that the terms of a contract between Bel Pagette
Belgrade and Bel Pagette Corporation Toronto provided simply for a
joint venture without entitling Bel Pagette Corporation Toronto to
any equity interest in Bel Pagette Belgrade. Thus, Bel Pagette Corporation
Toronto should not have been granted an order to allow them to appoint
their own managing director of a company which was 100% owned by Zoran
Markovic. He is continuing to appeal against the decision in the courts.
The statements in our article that Mr Markovic had stolen $1m and
a Mercedes from the company were wholly untrue and should not have
been published, as was the suggestion that the police evicted him
from his premises. Zoran Markovic remains loyal and patriotic to Serbia
and recognizes that the country badly needs foreign investment. He
is however, entitled to ensure that damaging and false statements
about him are corrected and Central European is happy to do so. We
would like to apologize for the accusations made against him and very
much regret any damage done to his reputation and business. |
